A little preparation before a waxing appointment makes the difference between a smooth, comfortable visit and one that is more uncomfortable than it needs to be. Here is what we recommend to clients ahead of time, whether it is your first appointment or your fiftieth.
This can be the hardest part for new clients, since a few weeks of visible growth before an appointment feels counterintuitive, but it genuinely leads to a cleaner, less painful result.
Let your hair grow to the right length
Wax needs hair to be long enough to grip, generally around a quarter of an inch, roughly the length of a grain of rice. If you shave right before your appointment thinking it will make things easier, it usually does the opposite, since the wax will not be able to grab short hair effectively and you may need to come back after it grows in more. If it has been a while since your last wax and hair is quite long, a light trim beforehand can also help, so do not hesitate to ask us about it when you book.
Prepare your skin in the days before
Skin that is clean, dry, and free of heavy lotion or oil holds wax better and reduces discomfort. In the day or two before your appointment:
- Gently exfoliate the area to remove dead skin and help prevent ingrown hairs
- Avoid applying heavy lotion, oil, or sunscreen directly before your visit
- Skip tanning, whether sun or spray tan, for at least 24 to 48 hours beforehand
- Let us know about any new skincare products, especially retinoids or exfoliating acids, since these can make skin more sensitive to waxing
If you are using a retinoid, recent acne treatment, or have had any skin procedures in the past week, mention it before we start. These can make skin more reactive and sometimes mean we need to wait or adjust the area treated.
If you are prone to sensitive skin, consider a patch test on a small area a day or two before your first appointment, especially if you have reacted to skincare products in the past. It is a small extra step that can prevent a frustrating reaction on a larger area.
Timing matters more than people expect
A few timing details make appointments more comfortable:
- Avoid waxing right before or during the first couple of days of your menstrual cycle if possible, since skin tends to be more sensitive during that window
- Take a mild over-the-counter pain reliever about 30 to 45 minutes before your appointment if you know waxing is uncomfortable for you, as long as that is something you would normally take
- Try not to schedule a wax immediately before a major event, in case of temporary redness or sensitivity
- Plan to avoid the gym, hot showers, saunas, or swimming for about 24 hours afterward, since sweat and heat can irritate freshly waxed skin
First-time appointments
If this is your first time getting waxed, it helps to know that some discomfort during the service is normal, but it should be brief and manageable rather than severe. Let the technician know right away if something feels off, since adjusting technique or pace mid-appointment is easy and far better than pushing through discomfort. Most first-time clients find later appointments far more comfortable once their hair growth cycle adjusts and they know what to expect.
What to expect during the appointment
We will talk through the area being treated and answer any questions before starting, especially if it is your first time or your first time with full body waxing. Mild redness and small bumps right after waxing are normal and usually settle within a few hours to a day. Anything beyond that, like significant swelling, blistering, or a rash that does not improve, is not typical and worth a follow-up.
Aftercare that actually helps
Once you get home, a few simple habits reduce irritation and help prevent ingrown hairs:
- Keep the area clean and avoid touching it unnecessarily for the rest of the day
- Wear loose, breathable clothing rather than anything tight or synthetic
- Start gentle exfoliation again after a couple of days to keep hair growing in properly, not before then
- Apply a fragrance-free moisturizer once any initial sensitivity has settled
When to reach out before your next visit
If you notice ingrown hairs that are not resolving on their own, ongoing irritation past a day or two, or any sign of infection like increasing redness, warmth, or pus, that is worth addressing before your next scheduled wax rather than waiting it out.
We offer both eyebrow waxing and full body waxing, and every new client gets a quick consultation so we can talk through your skin and hair growth before starting. If you have questions about preparing for your first appointment, just ask when you call.
We are located at 2839 Church Ave in Brooklyn and have been taking care of clients since 1990. Call 718-856-7575 or send us a text to book, and let us know ahead of time if it is your first waxing appointment so we can walk you through everything.
